Beyond The Trend: Sarongs

You can't go wrong in a sarong

Originating in Southeast Asia, sarongs (which derives from a Malay word for 'covering') are an ancient, traditional garment from the Java and the Malay islands. Styleed by artfully tying up large swathes of cloth, sarongs often come in a variety of bold colours and patterns, such as Indonesia's batik method, and can be constructed in as few as four steps. Today, sarongs are worn in dozens of countries and provinces around the world, and possess different cultural implications and names depending upon the location. Although typically worn by men for religious and ceremonial purposes, contemporary dress standards have popularised the sarong for all genders, and it remains a vacation staple for everyone from David Bowie to Doutzen Kroes. And with the centuries-old style making recent appearances on the runways of Paco Rabanne, Oscar de la Renta, and Chanel, it looks like the sarong is here to stay. CR examines the history behind this simple yet sensual summertime staple.
