Update 15/8/19: Maya Hawke Releases Two Songs From Upcoming Debut Album
After winning over legions of fans thanks to her Stranger Things debut, and appearing in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Maya Hawke is turning her talents to music.
Hawke, who's the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, released two tracks featuring her vocals 'To Love a Boy' and 'Stay Open' on Friday (16th August) from her upcoming, currently untitled album.
The lyrics were written by the actress, while singer-songwriter Jesse Harris composed and performed the gentle guitar melodies. Harris previously worked with Come Away With Me singer Norah Jones on her bestselling album – and these tracks definitely have some soothing Norah vibes.
Hawke shared a snippet of one song with her 2.3 million Instagram followers last week, quickly winning a legion of likes.
'Oh I like this a lot,' one wrote. While others said she sounded like Billie Eilish. 'Is there anything this girl can't do?', another added.
Doting dad Ethan Hawke was also seriously impressed with her sounds, posting this proud post.
Earlier this month Hawke gave an interview where she delved into being the daughter of two famous actors and what she's gained from it.
'I'm always running decisions by them,' she told WSJ magazine. 'They both have similar levels of success but really different experiences within the business.
'I think that's the biggest advantage [I have], that I have information about the pitfalls and the good things. Hopefully, it'll keep me from making some mistakes that young actors can make.'
Original story 9/7/19:
Stranger Things has returned for series three, welcoming back some of our favourite characters like Eleven, Mike, Nancy, Max and good old Joyce to our TV screens.
But there are also new additions to the cast of the Netflix show and one in particular has caught our attention.
Enter: Robin, Steve's clever and funny co-worker from the ice cream parlour who has swiftly become one our faves.
IRL, Robin is played by actress Maya Hawke. Here's everything you might want to know about her...
Who Is Maya Hawke?
Maya is a 21-year-old actress - she trained at the prestigious Juilliard School of performing arts - and was born and raised in New York City.
She's also modelled and was the face of All Saints' Spring 2017 campaign back in 2016.
She got the part in Stranger Things last year and was quickly whisked off to Atlanta, Georgia to begin filming. Last month, before the third season arrived on Netflix, Maya spoke about how her own personality influenced the character of Robin.
'I'm a super joyful, exuberant person, especially on set; I bring a lot of energy, maybe from nerves or something, but they kind of tapped onto that and then started to write the character more along those lines... throughout the season she became more and more like me,' she told Women's Wear Daily.
Maya said it was difficult at first to find her footing among stars like Millie Bobby Brown, Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton - who Stranger Things served as a major breakout role for and now they're very used to the show's fandom - but puts that down to her own nerves.
'Everyone who works on the show loves the show,' she told WWD. 'Everyone is really devoted to it so it was probably only me that made it hard. Just psychologically.'
What Has Maya Hawke Been In Before Stranger Things?
If you've frantically IMDB'd Maya after watching Stranger Things, you may be thinking of the BBC adaptation of Little Women which aired on the broadcaster in 2017.
Maya played sister Jo March, alongside an impressive line-up of co-stars such as Big Little Lies' Kathryn Newton, Murder She Wrote's legendary actress Angela Lansbury and Dumbledore himself Michael Gambon.
She's was also cast in indie movie Ladyworld and picked for a part in Quentin Tarantino's hugely anticipated upcoming film, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie to name a few, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Who Are Maya Hawke's Parents
Another reason why you could recognise Maya is because she has very famous, talented actor parents. Most specifically, she really resembles her mother Uma Thurman who of course is best known for her parts in Tarantino films like Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction.
Maya's dad is Ethan Hawke, who was married to Thurman from 1998 until their divorce in 2004. Thurman and Hawke also had a son, Levon.
Maya said she initially hesitated to go down the acting route 'because it was the family business' until she realised that, after starring in every single school play, it was what made her the happiest.
As for the pressures of being the daughter of Hollywood royalty, Maya appears to have a measured approach to the whole situation.
'It makes for more expectations and it makes it so that people doubt your intentions, ability and your place but the truth is that you just have to work hard and hopefully you learn your place,' she told WWD. 'And there are all kinds of ways that it helps you get a foot in the door, but you're going to get booted out of the door if, once you're in, you suck.'
After series three of Stranger Things landed, Ethan Hawke was full of typical fatherly praise, sharing an adorably proud post on Instagram, captioning it: 'She's the real thing.'
Will Maya Hawke Return For Season 4 Of Stranger Things?
At the moment, we've got no reason to believe she won't be.. but nothing has been announced by Netflix in terms of a fourth season yet.
