In 'Oh God, how did I get so old?' news, seminal teen movie will turn 20 years old this year.
Loosely based on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, the late '90s high school flick starred , Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
In the film, student Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) strikes a deal with bad boy Patrick Verona (Ledger) to date the 'shrewish' Kat (Stiles), so that her father will allow Cameron to date Kat's more popular sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik).
Eventually, (spoiler alert!) the ruse is exposed, just as Patrick develops real feelings for Kat. But she forgives his earlier boorish behaviour – he is *very* charming – and the two pair up at the movie's end.
Reflecting on the film's enduring popularity after two decades, Julia Stiles told Digital Spy and other press: "I wanted that part so badly, because it was the first time I had read such a feisty teenage girl. I hadn't seen a teenage girl like that on-screen."
The actress also revealed her favourite memory from set of co-star Ledger, who sadly passed away in 2008, aged just 28.
'I had never gotten drunk before and I had to play drunk in one of the scenes,' she explained. 'I remember Heath Ledger talking me through what that felt like!
'I look back on it so fondly. It's an honour to be part of a movie that people are still talking about 20 years later.'
Though only a moderate box office success on original release in 1999, proved to be a breakthrough film for Stiles, Ledger and Gordon-Levitt and also inspired a spin-off TV series.
Stiles is now starring in thriller series Riviera, returning to Sky Atlantic for its second season on Thursday, May 23 at 9pm.
