If you feel as though you can't bear to wait until season 2 of Big Little Lies, then HBO's newest series, Sharp Objects, is here to keep you occupied. Here's everything you need to know about your future addiction...
The release date
It premieres this July on HBO; an exact release date has yet to be announced. It's not yet been confirmed how the series will be broadcast in the UK.
Sharp Objects is based on the debut 2007 novel from author Gillian Flynn, who found international fame after her book (and then consequential film) Gone Girl became an international hit. Sharp Objects follows the story of reporter Camille Preaker, played by Amy Adams, who returns to her hometown to investigate the murders of two young girls, but ends up waking her own demons in the process.
While the book follows similar themes of violence, murder and family drama seen in both Gone Girl and Big Little Lies, this is altogether darker and more terrifying, by all accounts. Horror writer Stephen King described the tale as 'an admirably nasty piece of work'.
Flynn wrote the scripts with showrunner Marti Noxon, who was a former executive producer and writer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Big Little Lies director, Jean-Marc Vallée, will helm all eight episodes. Blumhouse Productions will be producing the series, who are the company behind famous thrillers and horror films like Get Out, Insidious, and The Purge, so, all things considered, it's pretty much guaranteed to be the next gripping series that you'll binge watch on the edge of your seat.
Amy Adams stars in the mini-series, marking her first TV role since her three-episode stint in The Office back in 2005. Patricia Clarkson plays her mother, Adora, while Chris Messina, Eliza Scanlen, Elizabeth Perkins, Matt Craven, and It breakout star Sophia Lillis also star.
