Paris Style Week: People Can't Stop Dancing On The SS17 Runways

Flash mobs, ballerinas, interpretive modern — all of it

Usually the trends worth talking about are clothing-based, as in a recurring kind of ruffle, for instance, a new colour story, or a change in shape and silhouette.

But one of the biggest trends for SS17 is related to the staging. I'm talking about dance. People literally keep dancing on the runways and we have mixed feelings about it.

You could read this one of two ways. A) It's a gimmick. A grab for headlines and likes because fashion has become so oversaturated that people literally have to tap dance and wave jazz hands to grab and hold your attention. Or B) It's simply an attempt to put a sense of fun and buoyancy back into fashion in the midst of a fairly heavy, fraught year. And while there have certainly been examples of the former this month, I'd like to think this phenomenon is generally a result of the latter. Dance is fun! And it makes you feel good. Here's a look at some of the season's more memorable moments so far:

In New York, the hiplets led a flashmob while dressed in Sandy Liang

In Manchester Molly Goddard's models were raving

In Milan, Antonio Marras staged a different kind of party as dancers did the twist in homage to photographer Malick Sidibe

And Tod's had literal jazz hands, clad in gloves, dancing around shoes and bags

And we all remember Dolce & Gabbana's Sicilian carnival flashmob where dancers did an … interesting mix of breakdance and drag ball choreography (duck walk, Leiyomi drop and all)

In Paris, contemporary modern dancers gave an emotive performance at Rabih Kayrouz

And Stella McCartney put on the season's best-dressed dance off in the finale of today's show
