Put The Phone Down! Why Blue Light Could Be Damaging Your Skin

Is your addiction to Insta ruining your skin?

Blue light Skincare

While we may blame our 24 hour digital world for increased anxiety and dreaded ‘tech neck’, unfortunately our reliance on technology also has the potential to damage our skin.

The culprit? Blue light, also known as High Energy Visible Light (HEV). Although sunlight is the biggest source of blue light, what’s becoming concerning is the blue light given off by electronic devices such as computer screens, electronic notebooks and, of course, your phone.

Considering the amount of time many of us now spend glued to these screens (who hasn’t ended up down an Instagram black hole stalking their ex’s sister’s best friend’s wedding), it’s becoming an increasing worry in terms of our health, in particular our skin.

'This constant exposure to blue light increases the potential risks associated with damaging free radicals and the resulting oxidative stress which can lead to premature ageing of the skin,' Kate Bancroft of Face The Future explained.

Scarily, blue light actually penetrates deeper than UVA/UVB rays, and Bancroft highlights that 'collagen degradation and elastin loss caused by blue light is greater than that caused by UV.'

It’s not all bad news though, and we can take steps to protect our skin. Blue light shields and ‘night mode’ settings on your devices can help limit the impact but choosing the right skincare makes a huge difference too. 'Antioxidants are our first line of defence; think Vitamins A, C, E and Ferulic Acid. To further protect skin against blue light make sure you’re always wearing a broad-spectrum SPF,' Bancroft advises.
