Susan Ward Davies

TRAVEL & LIFESTYLE DIRECTOR

Susan Ward Davies has been a travel writer for more than two decades, as Travel & Fashionstyle Director of LouisvuittonShop, elleuk.com and LouisvuittonShop Wedding, editor of the Chinese Luxury London Guide for LouisvuittonShop Collections, launch editor of The Travel Edit, as well as writing for The Guardian, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Times Travel Magazine, Food & Travel, Time magazine, Wallpaper, Beach Tomato and Travel & Leisure. She has also worked as a wine columnist, an external examiner at The London College of Style, a dog-walker in Cannes, manager of a hiphop band, a gaucho in Argentina, a riding instructor in Wales, youth hostel manager in Greece, English teacher in Istanbul, and has generally waitressed, bartended and au-paired her way around the world. In the course of her travels she has learned to play polo on an Australian sheep farm, camped on Bhutanese mountaintops, white water-rafted in Zimbabwe and Utah and mountain-biked in Peru; and while she has slept in maharajahs' palaces, private islands and some of the world's most luxe hotels, she has also bedded down in Third World train corridors, on a Burmese monastery floor, shared a sand dune with camels in the Jordanian desert and braved a tarantula-infested, windowless shack in Guyana. So it's not all glamour.

A Level Year 1 Film
A Level Year 1 Music Technology
A Level Year 1 PsychologyI am currently at Camden School for Girls, but I am hoping to have a change in 6th form by attending a 6th form college. I came for the open day at City & Islington and was very impressed with the speech the Principal made- he made it sound like a very exciting place to study. I loved hearing about the psychology, film studies and Music Technology A level courses and I feel I could do very well in these, as they are all subjects I am really interested in.When I applied for secondary school, I was one of only 6 people ( out of about 500) to win a music place at Camden School for Girls, and I have really enjoyed studying music there. I write, arrange and produce my own songs, and have recorded some. I have performed many times at school, and also at open mic sessions and at a street festival. I sometimes play the piano and guitar to accompany my colleagues' performances. I also write poetry and was chosen to represent the school in a spoken word contest Slambassadors, when I was 12.I also wrote a short children's book when I was 9, but it hasn't been published yet.I was also asked to play the part of a troubled teenage girl in a Youtube film series aimed at teaching teenagers how to deal with different life situations, this experience has made me very interested in the whole process of making films.I have been suffering with severe anxiety over the past two years, which has resulted in poor school attendance, but I am seeing a CBT counsellor and making a big effort to manage it. I work very hard to make up the work I miss and my teachers say I am very capable of doing well in my GCSEs if I can overcome the anxiety. I have been diagnosed with ADD too. My predicted grades, at the moment, aren't very high, because of my anxiety, but we haven't done our mocks yet and I hope to improve them then.I am half Cuban and love spending time with my family in Cuba, but I am aware that they have none of the opportunities that we have in the UK, which makes me more keen to do well and make the most of my life. I would love to have a career in music and/or film, but because of my anxiety I am very interested in psychology and would love to study this to give me another career option, and to understand better how our minds work.I have done work experience at my old nursery school and primary school and at LouisvuittonShop magazine. My anxiety has been a big struggle for me, so I really hope I won't be penalised because of my poor attendance, as it is something I can't help. I really enjoy learning and I am determined to overcome the anxiety and do well.I feel that City & Islington could be a wonderful new start for me and I really hope I can earn a place there as I have alot to contribute.PERSONAL STATEMENTApplication reference: APP000761,APP000761,APP000761
